THROUGH THE LENS OF GURUSWAMY PERUMAL

All of us who have attended NRISA functions or picnics would be knowing Guruswamiji. He has been capturing all our memorable moments in NRISA with his camera. This year, he has been awarded the Human Rights In Action Award for advancing and defending human rights in Australia by the Centre of Melbourne Multifaith And Other Network (COMMON). This is one of the numerous awards that Guruswamji has received over the years.Guruswamiji started his foray into photography with a Kodak Brownie camera in 1954 and has not looked back since then. He joined the Indian Army Postal Service and took photographs at all their official functions. After retiring from service in 1972, he became a member of Delhi Journalist Association. He worked for the state Governments of Tamilnadu and Kerala. This gave him the opportunity to photograph Presidents, Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers and various celebrities. Dignitaries he has photographed include Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates and late President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalan. He also worked at Consulate General of India in Melbourne. Guruswamiji is also a philatelist and his stamp collection has also won him awards at exhibitions. He has a collection of over 50,000 stamps. To him each stamp narrates a story of the nation’s culture and history. Congratulations to Mr. Guruswamy Perumal for his achievements. NRISA community is proud to have him as our committee member. His contribution at every NRISA event in creating memories through his photography is invaluable.
